Good Samaritan Nursing Home Hosts Event

Participants donate non-perishable goods to the Sayville Food Pantry.

The Good Samaritan Nursing Home held its first annual Chinese auction and spaghetti dinner at the West Sayville Fire House on Wednesday. In addition to the admission charge, non-perishable food items were collected to benefit the Greater Sayville Food Pantry. For each food item donated, guests received one raffle ticket for the auction.

The turnout was impressive, as the tables in the fire house filled up quickly. "This is our first annual event, and it has definitely exceeded our expectations," said Christine Schomberg, Director of Recreation at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. "The donations that people brought for the Greater Sayville Food Panty have been amazing as well."

The local community came out to show its support, but local businesses were equally supportive in their donations for the event. All of the baskets, gift certificates and Chinese auction items were donated by businesses in Sayville and the surrounding communities.

"Everything you see here would never have been possible without the help of all of our volunteers, and the charitable donations by the local businesses," said Myra Lekanides, nursing supervisor at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. "We have such a great turnout here tonight and everyone has been very gracious to us."

All the food served was homemade, cooked and served by the Good Samaritan dieticians in their own kitchens.

Items from the Chinese auction – more than 350 in all – ran the gamut from restaurant gift certificates to recreational items, flowers, movie tickets and more. There was also a 50/50 raffle prize drawn at the end of the night.

The goal of the fundraising event was to purchase a new sound system for the dining room of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, which is a 100-bed non-profit home located in Sayville. Its goal is to create a safe, comfortable and loving home for elders, filled with laughter, joy and a sense of belonging.
