Deer Park Teacher Gets Inside Look At Google

Deer Park High School teacher Christopher Kauter has a love of technology, which he uses to help teach his 10th grade students.

This week, Kauter was part of the Google Teacher Academy in Chicago, where he was one of 63 educators to get a firsthand look at various Google products and resources.

“My goal is to get these kids to have fun while learning and allow them to teach themselves something new,” Kauter told Newsday. “I’m tricking them into learning by having fun and thinking outside the box.”

Half Hollow Hills Softball Team Wins District 34 Title

The Half Hollow Hills Little League Minors softball team recently won the Williamsport District 34 Championship.

The team went 5-0 and allowed only three runs over the five games. The team went on to the Long Island finals and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker.

Patchogue Assisted Living Resident's Son Gives Painting To Center

Marc Salmin, of Northport, recently donated a painting he created to McPeak's Assisted Living in Patchogue in appreciation of the way the they take care of his father, Alex, who has been living at the facility since 2011.  

According to a release from McPeak's Assisted Living, Salmin re-created "Louisa in the Outside Studio," an artwork originally done by William Starkweather.

West Islip Softball Juniors Clinch Long Island Championship

Congratulations to the West Islip Little League Junior Softball team, who on Saturday July 20 the Williamsport Long Island Championship by defeating Hicksville by a score of 9-2. The team will travel to Chatham, New York where this weekend they will play for the New York State Championship. 

Main St Holbrook LIRR Crossing To Get Facelift

New York State Assemblyman Al Graf (R,C,I-Holbrook) was recently joined by members of the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, representatives of the LIRR and Islip's Department of Public Works to brainstorm renovations and upgrades to the railroad crossing that runs through Main Street in Holbrook. 

In a statement from Graf's office, the assemblyman described the crossing in "disrepair" and stated the need for renovations to improve pedestrian safety as well. Graf projected that renovation and upgrades to the crossing should be in place by September. 

Greenhouse Donated to Lindenhurst High School

Lindenhurst High School is developing a greenhouse, partially thanks to Tanger Outlets who recently provided a check for $1,000 towards the development of the project. 

Teacher Colleen Van Tassel will spearhead the project to pilot agricultural chemistry as a project-based Regent’s chemistry enrichment.  

The greenhouse will also be used by science research for individual student projects, food science teachers and technology teachers. The teachers will collaborate to make this an interdisciplinary project.
