Funeral Services Set for Al Werner, Longtime Airport Commissioner

Lifelong Bayport native died Tuesday from cancer.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Alfred Werner, a 83-year-old Bayport resident, who is credited with making Town of Islip’s MacArthur Airport the regional transport hub it is today.

Werner was a Bayport High School graduate, a member of the school’s 1946 championship basketball team, served in the Air Force and worked as the airport commissioner for 53 years, according to an obituary published by Raynor and D’Andria funeral home.

He also served on the Board of the MTA for 23 years where he was on both the LIRR Committee and the Finance Committee. Werner was a lifelong
Republican and active member of the East End Republican Club.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Mary Lou Cohalan and her family, his brother, Robert of California and his sister, Mary McKinley of Georgia, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Jodi in 1996.

Visiting will take place June 15 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville.  A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow RC Church in Blue Point. A private cremation will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Hospital Road, Patchogue, New York 11772, are appreciated.
