Fox on a Hot Shingled Roof

Is this fox tanning, resting, or just homeless?

When Patch caught a fox trotting through a Blue Point backyard earlier this week, we thought it was a unique event.

How wrong we were. As Patch quickly learned from the many readers who wrote in, commented on the photo and posted on our Facebook page, there may be more foxes between Blue Point and West Sayville than dogs or raccoons or even squirrels.

Foxes, apparently, are everywhere: playing in yards, stealing shoes off decks, having babies in backyards, strutting across Middle Road, slowly strolling from one neighbor's home to another's.

And they're just not being seen daily, they're being heard all over town. Their cries at night are described as eerie, sad, a bit unnerving.

So Patch intends to dig in a bit and find out why red foxes are getting as prevalent as bamboo so stay tuned to what we're calling the 'Fox Files.'

Got a shot of a fox.. share it and we'll add it to this story gallery. Email judy.mottl@patch.com
