Bites Nearby: Flo's Famous Luncheonette

Blue Point's "famous" summer food spot opens for the season on Saturday.

Flo's is a summer season staple for residents of Bayport-Blue Point, and it's not only because of the eats they offer, but the luncheonette's historic roots and small down charm also help to make it an iconic part of the community.

Flo's- also a hangout for teens, families and beach-goers every year-  on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. For a majority of B-BP residents, it's not summer until you have Flo's.

Flo Kimball opened the eatery in this old-fashioned beach hamlet in 1926. After Kimball's death in 1950, the business was bought and continued to thrive.

The luncheonette offers what they refer to as "an excellent piece of Americana: friends, family, toasted sandwiches, shakes, and much, much more," it states on their website.

Their menu includes grill items, such as the "Rueben Burger" and "Flo Ripper," as well as seafood, like baked clams and beer-battered shrimp. That's not all: Flo's menu also includes frozen smoothies, salads, toasted sandwiches and ice creams.

There have been improvements to the building over the last few years: A stone walkway and decorative wooden lighthouses have been added and the menu has also received a makeover.

Flo's is open daily 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and is located at 302 Middle Road in Blue Point.
