More than 200 visitors enjoyed a guided tour of the hangars, flying demonstrations, flights in an antique aircraft and barbequed food at the Bayport Aerodrome Society's Annual Picnic.
Eleanor Tilvik Vorek, a former pilot, traveled from Garden City to admire the planes at the Aerodrome.
“I never flew out of here. I never even flew out of Long Island except from Republic [Airport in Farmingdale] to keep my night currency. I got the newsletter and thought ‘Why not?’ I thought that they might be giving some exhibition flights,” Vorek said.
Flights were delayed until late afternoon while waiting for the weather to clear. It eventually turned into a gorgeous day.
The Aerodrome Society is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1972. Comprised of aviation professionals and those interested in preserving aviation history, it was designated a historic landmark in 2008. It currently operates as a living aviation museum and the only public airport on Long Island to still have grass runways.
