A Sweet Treat On South Main Street

Jeanine's Cool Cupcakes and Cakery held grand opening on Saturday.

Jeanine’s Cool Cupcakes and Cakery held its grand opening celebration on South Main Street this Saturday.

Owner and West Sayville resident Jeanine Sheppard had a vision when she and her husband first came across the store space at 40 South Main Street.

“I fell in love with the front and we were looking to do something like this,” she said. Her husband Bob, a contractor, executed that vision by doing all the renovations himself which included building display fixtures.

“I wanted to get a couple of cases and some tables with baskets, but instead he built custom counters. He didn’t want to just slap on some paint. He was picking staples out of the walls for two days. That’s his way,” she said.

Sheppard grew up working in her family’s bakery business that stretches over four generations. “I’ve always been involved in the family bakery, but this is the first time I am on my own,” she said. Her signature cannoli recipe comes all the way from Italy where her great, great grandfather, Salvatore Morra, owned a bakery.

Sheppard’s grandparents immigrated to New York and brought the family recipe along with them to their bakery in Little Italy. “The cannoli is a big deal in here because it’s our secret family recipe. An ingredient that you think wouldn’t be in a cannoli is in there. Our cannolis will only be special order for now. We make it all from scratch. We even fry the shells. This recipe is well over 100 years old and I’m very proud of it," Sheppard said.

Cool Cupcakes also offers vegan, gluten free and sugar free cupcakes. They are experts in baking high-end wedding cakes and special made to order goods. Homemade beverages such as hot chocolate with real piped whipped cream and Hot Cider will be available for the winter season.

“If you think it, we can do it. We’re very gourmet, very specialty. I really want people to walk in here and have fun. You can get a $0.50 cupcake or a $10 cupcake. We’re going to really cater to everybody. It’s going to be fun like you’re walking into Candy Land,” Sheppard said.

Sheppard also stresses that she is dedicated to give her patrons the best experience possible. “My staff is very friendly and very personable. We want you to come in and get to know you by name. Even if you want to come in just to say ‘hello,' there will always be samples to try,” she said.

Catering is available for all occasions with a full set up of a dessert buffet and coming this spring, Cool Cupcakes will be offering on-premise children’s parties. Store hours are from 9 a.m.– 9 p.m. every day.
