Sandy's Wrath at Fire Island's Barrett, Talisman & Water Island Beaches

Kate Lotz and her husband John, both former Sayville residents who now live in Oakdale, toured Barrett Beach, Talisman and Water Island on Fire Island Thursday morning to assess how their most favorite childhood beach areas fared in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The devastation is evident. Boardwalks ripped apart, significant erosion and a breach at Barrett. Walkways to nowhere. Debris everywhere.

As the former Sayville residents' photos illustrate the barrier beach was hit hard.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloated…Read More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
