A Day to Honor Veterans

A list of local events happening Thursday, Nov. 11 and what to expect on Patch later today.

Those currently serving our country get a special travel deal, starting today. Active duty members of the armed forces returning to Long Island through MacArthur Airport will find it a bit easier to get home, thanks to a new program announced by Islip Town and Lindy's Taxi. From Veteran's Day through the end of the year, Lindy's is offering all service members free transportation from the airport in Ronkonkoma to their homes on Long Island, as a way of saying "thank you" for their service to the country.   • Have extra food in your garage or pantry? Donate your canned or packaged food at . The business is holding their fifth annual food drive for the Sheppards I.I.I. Soup kitchen in Ronkonkoma. In the past, they donated the goods to L.I. Harvest, Sayville Soup Pantry and Lighthouse Mission.  This year they will be donating the funds to the Sheppards Soup Kitchen at St. Joseph's in Ronkonkoma. They prepare dinners  every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday- all  contributions are needed. 
  • Enjoy a fashionable night out for a worthy cause. Prince of Peace Regional Catholic School presents its 20th annual Fashion Show and Chinese Auction, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Villa Lombardi, 877 Main St., Holbrook. Admire the designs items from local businesses modeled by the school's 8th graders as well as adults. More than 100 gift baskets in the Chinese Auction, a share of the 50/50 Raffle or one of the Super Raffle prizes. Proceeds benefit Prince of Peace Regional Catholic Schoolin Sayville. For more information and to purchase tickets call (631) 589-3426.
