5 Fun Things to Do at Sayville Library During School Break

Get ready for next week's school break with this list of fun things to do.

Now with school closed for the holiday week, the house is noisier and it’s a bit harder to get anything done if you’re also home on vacation with the family.

So what better time than to catch up on what’s happening at the local library. There’s plenty going on in addition to all the new books, videos, and events.

Here are five things to do at the Sayville Library during the holiday break:

Learn Hometown History

Whether you’re a Sayville or West Sayville native, or brand-new to the community, it’s likely you don’t know everything there is to know about your hometown. So schedule sometime to listen to check out this visual image history collection the library boasts.

Mark The Calendar: WWII Presentation

Chris Bodkin shares insight about Carl Johnson and Florence Evans who are memorialized in Sayville. Both were honored by the government for service to the country:  Johnson died on the first day of WWII, Evans on the last day of the war. Sayville holds the record for being the only hamlet to lose two people in combat on the first and last day of WWII. The program runs 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the Sayville Historical Society

Get Volunteering in the New Year

The library offers a wide variety of ideas and resources for teens looking to get going on some volunteer efforts. There are over a dozen potential venues for sharing your time and expertise.

Hone Those Tech Skills

Expecting a new fancy mobile phone or tablet from Santa and going to need some help on how to use it? The library offers free one-on-one tech training. Just call 589-4440 ext. 305 to make a tech tutorial appointment.

Start the New Year With a Fun Movie

The day after New Year’s doesn’t have to be boring. Grab the kids up on January 2 and head to the library for a screening of Monsters University, from 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. All ages are welcome and all children must have a care giver with them at the showing.
