Kingston's Clam Bar; A Lovely End to a Summer Day on the Great South Bay

End your summer day at Kingston's Clam Bar in West Sayville.

There is little else that compares to a blustery afternoon sail followed by a seafarers’ delight at Kingston’s Clam Bar in West Sayville.  The wind blew 20 mph gust on the Great South Bay.  Matt and I crewed on the Priscilla from the Long Island Maritime Museum and enjoyed an exhilarating  ride.

By the time we docked ( a feat in and of its self) and tucked the 1880 oyster sloop to bed, we were hungry. Kingston’s Clam Bar is just around the corner from the Maritime Museum at the end of Atlantic Ave.

The menu offers a fair selection of seafood and fish dishes; broiled, fried or in a refreshing salad, and delicious soups.  There are also landlubber choices for those who need chicken or beef in a seafood restaurant.

Cold beer on tap and very reasonable and pretty mixed drinks are always wonderful on a summer night. Even  the plasticware really works for this relaxed out of the way eatery.  It is seated in the West Sayville boat basin whereby one can dock their boat (free!) and enjoy a meal with a waterfront view.

Kingston’s Clam Bar is opened during the summer season and is a popular spotfor boaters, bikers, pedestrians, and car travelers as well. Last night Kingston’s Clam Bar was busy, but we were able to get a table and the wait service was great.

Margaritas on the rocks with salted rims quickly quenched our thirst. To our delight, specials were offered. We ordered the fried calamari with spicy teriyaki sauce, sesame seeds and pineapple. The order was more than enough for two. As good as it sounded, the sauce was heavy and sweet and the calamari was a bit overdone.

For entrées we ordered a broiled fisherman’s platter and the avocado and crab salad with balsamic vinaigrette on the side.  The flounder (not tilapia) was flakey and flavorful and the accompanied  tender scallops, stuffed clams with real clam, and stuffed shrimp with crabmeat…oh my! The crisp vegetable side complimented the dish. The simple avocado and crab salad held fresh and clean tastes. Thetri-color tortilla chips gave the dish a pop of color and crunch.

Overall, Kingston’s Clam Bar is a great summer spot for a reasonable and tasty meal.
