Sayville Class of 2014 Commencement
Sayville High School graduates from the Class of 2014 celebrated their Commencement on Saturday June 28th on a bright day under a blazing summer sun. Processing along with the 245 graduates were more than 100 Alumni (one Alumnus was from 1938) participating in the Annual Alumni Walk. Senior members of the High School Jazz Choir sang The Star-Spangled Banner and award-winning vocal soloist Gabrielle Kalomiris sang Billy Joel’s Vienna as a special tribute to her class. Speeches by Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner and Board of Education President John Verdone wished the graduates well, while Salutatorian Nicole DelGaudio, Valedictorian Liam Hofmeister, and Class President Michael Farese shared their insights, comic anecdotes, and a few sight gags (such as, tearing up a the Valedictorian speech and sunglasses for every grad) to liven up the morning ceremonies. After the diplomas were awarded, a brief visit by Senator Chuck Schumer was followed by Principal Ron Hoffer’s final words of appreciation, and then the graduates’ purple and gold mortarboards sailed upward against a cobalt blue sky.
