B-BP BOE Victors: Election Proves Community Wants Change

As three incumbents depart come June, the three newcomers believe change is needed.

Bayport-Blue Point taxpayers are bringing big change to the board of education come July having voted out two longtime incumbents and electing three new members on Tuesday. Newcomers Rebecca Campbell, John Lynch and Bill Milligan, a trio who ran on a quasi-slate strategy, beat out BOE Vice President Andrea O’Neill and trustee Jane Burgess in one of the biggest election upsets in years. The number of tenured board members leaving once terms expire in June is three, as Kathy Heinlein chose not to seek re-election this year. That leaves four incumbents, two of which have double-digit tenure: Board President Jim March and 12-year trustee Lenny Camarda. The remaining two trustees are Molly E Licalzi and Diane D’Angelo who are both in their …

“It Starts With Sylvan” Raises $1K for Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Bayport elementary students fundraiser in March was a huge success.

On April 3, over 400 students grades K through 5 from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School attended an assembly in which members of “It Starts With Sylvan” presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Alzheimer’s Association Long Island. The money was raised during the month of March and went toward the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which will take place September 8 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Students helped raise money by purchasing AALI awareness ribbons for a donation. In addition, peer leaders sold Alzheimer’s awareness pens, shoelaces, backpack tags and bracelets to students at the school’s “Awareness Shop” and sold paper forget-me-nots to grow the school’s “Memory Garden.” They also wrote letters to their “Grandpals” who reside …

Real Life Learning on Shadow Day

Students embark on the annual high school "Shadow Day" to sample careers.

Radio show host, police officer and baker were just a few of the professions juniors at Bayport- Blue Point High School got to sample as part of the school’s annual Shadow Day on Thursday.  Doug Monsell, the school’s business teacher, said the School-to-Business Partnership program was created four years ago with the help of Principal Timothy Hearney. “I think business in high school is one of the most important things,” Monsell said. “Why are you in high school? Because you’re going to go to college, vocational school or you’re going to go to work. What better way to find out what you want to do than to go out and shadow a profession to see what actually goes on in the real world?” Students gathered in the auditorium before embarking as …

UPDATED: With Absentees Counted, Calarco Claims Victory in 7th LD Race

The Democrat maintains Election Night lead after absentee votes tabulated on Thursday.

Rob Calarco will be the next Suffolk County legislator in the 7th District. With more than 500 absentee ballots now counted, the Democrat from Patchogue has edged out Republican John Giannott. "I look forward to really working now and tackling the big issues in Suffolk County," Calarco said Friday. "We all know we have a tough budget ahead of us and we have to continue to do the things that people expect the county to do." Giannott conceded on his Facebook page Thursday evening. "Volunteers, friends, family and over 6000 voters, the counting is done and unfortunately we have come up just short!," wrote Giannott, a political newcomer who owns two businesses in Bellport.  The Suffolk County Board of Elections is expected to release the final…

Islip Supervisor Race Absentee Ballots Remain Uncounted

Board of Election official tells Patch that count could take place early next week.

Finalizing the race for Islip Town Supervisor will not happen until at least the early part of next week, Patch has learned. Anita Katz, commissioner with the Suffolk County Board of Elections, said the counting of approximately 1,700 absentee ballots in the race between incumbent Democrat Phil Nolan and Republican challenger Tom Croci has not started. Katz said the counting of absentee ballots in closely contested County Legislature and Town races across Suffolk were scheduled ahead of the Islip Supervisor’s race. Following Election Day last Tuesday, Croci, with 24,056 votes, held a slim 419-vote lead over Nolan. Newsday recently reported that registered Republicans or Conservatives filed a majority of the yet-to-be-counted absentee …

Nearly 530 Absentee Votes to be Counted in 7th LD Race

Vote counting to begin Wednesday, according to Suffolk Board of Elections.

More than 500 absentee ballots are yet to be counted in the contentious race to replace Jack Eddington as the next Suffolk County legislator in the 7th District. As it stands, Democrat Rob Calarco leads Republican John Giannott by 103 votes--6,051-5,948--after the ballots were tallied on Election Day. "Just sitting tight and waiting for the board to get going on counting the absentees," Calarco told Patch Monday. Suffolk County Board of Elections Commissioner Wayne T. Rogers says that there are 528 absentee ballots that need to be counted in the race. Counting will begin Wednesday for legislative races. The Commissioner has not yet decided in what order the districts’ votes will be counted. An official from the office told Patch that all …
