The traffic around Foster and Montauk is slow as drivers check out the festivities.
TD Bank opens its 51st store today with the new branch in Sayville, at the corner of Foster Avenue and Montauk Highway. Lawmakers strolled in for the ribbon cutting ceremony though public attendance was still pretty light as of 10:30 a.m. Bank officials expect a crowd though once Little League games are done and shoppers hit the downtown area. The fun runs until 2 p.m. today with free hot dogs, an ice cream cart and prizes including a $1,000 shopping spree and hourly drawings to win a $100 TD Bank gift card. You must be present to win though but there's a DJ to keep you entertained.

Waterside restaurant grabs lion’s share in weekly readers’ poll.
Patch asked and readers resoundingly answered when it came to naming the most popular seafood restaurant between Blue Point and West Sayville. Sayville’s own Cull House took 45 percent of the 106 votes cast in this week’s Readers’ Choice poll. Readers’ Choice is a new weekly feature where we ask you – our readers – to tell us your top picks on the businesses and local attractions that get your loyalty. Each Monday we’ll list nominees recommendations. On Friday we’ll tabulate all of the poll votes, comments, recent directory reviews and emails and crown a Reader’s Choice. West Sayville’s Kingston’s took second place with 16 percent of the tally. Here’s a breakdown of the results. Fish Store 11 (10%) Kingston's 17 (16%) J.T.'s on the Bay…

Patch wants to know what residents think of old/new tax idea.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, facing a hefty budget deficit of $530 million, is working to identify potential new revenue, cost-cutting manuevers and part of the effort includes at least one new 'one-shot' tax idea. This one would place a tax surcharge on the local Fire Island ferry industry. It was proposed back in April and quickly met with opposition from both ferry operators and Fire Island organizations. According to published reports the county attempted a similiar taxing approach in 1990 to pay for police costs but it was vehemently opposed. Patch is awaiting word on the status of the new ferry charge proposal, but in the meantime wants to know if residents approve of these sort of tax strategies to raise quick revenue.

The new animal clinic on Montauk Highway once had a unique landscape figure.
The nearly-ready to open vetenarian center, Grady Animal Hospital, on Montauk Highway in Sayville, was boasting a unique landscape feature: some sort of animal carved from a shrub. Even up close it was hard to tell whether it was a deer, elk or an antelope but there was some smaller animal clearly on its head. But before Patch could get the scoop it disappeared. It was there for over a week and last spotted Monday mid afternoon but then gone by 5 p.m. with just dirt tracks where it once stood.
Living on an Island, it’s hard not to find fresh seafood. But what local spot has you hooked?
It’s one of the joys of living on Long Island, the abundance of fresh seafood and the sheer number of places where the local oysters are shucked and slurped by the dozen, where bright red lobsters drip with drawn butter and fillets of fish from fluke to tuna come baked, broiled or fried. So this week let’s find out what local seafood restaurant has you hook, line and sinker. Readers’ Choice is a new weekly feature where we ask you – our readers – to tell us your top picks on the businesses and local attractions that get your loyalty. Each Monday we’ll list our nominees recommendations. Did we leave your go-to spot off the list? Go ahead and add it in comments. On Friday we’ll tabulate all of the poll votes, comments, recent directory …

Flowers are great, but one-on-one time doing something to help sick children is better.
Ok, there are 72 hours give or take until your Mom expects her gift, or your wife expects her gifts from the kids or Grandma expects gifts from everyone. Luckily, local merchants have some great options and Patch offers up a list of ideas. Several are courtesy of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce’s newsletter so thank you Barbara Whitehead at Seafarer (which is a terrific place to find gifts for the mom who loves beautiful jewelry and anything nautical). Moms Who Love Planting Get over to True Value Hardware, which is now open late, and get Mom whatever tools, flowers or spring planting items she needs to get flowers in the ground this weekend. Yes, maybe you’d save a few cents hitting some big box store, but shopping local is also a …
New local vet hospital to open soon and Visual Arts Showcase happening this weekend.
It looks like the new animal hospital and care center is nearly ready to open its doors on Montauk Highway in Sayville. There also seems to be a new ‘pet animal clinic’ at the corner of Gillette Avenue and Montauk in Bayport these days. Does that mean more people have more pets these days or are just taking better care of pets one has to wonder. The recent newsletter of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce was jammed packed with great news. According to the newsletter Sayville Running Company store co-owner Brendan Barrett finished in the top 13 of this past week's LI Marathon. The Long Island Maritime Museum sent Patch an update this week on the annual ‘Pirate Festive Aaarghhhives’ slated to be held June 16 and 17. Let Patch save you time. …

The Blue Point Brewing Company may also be igniting a brand-new Long Island industry.
Blue Point Brewery will certainly have something to toast if a proposed production tax credit gets approval from New York State lawmakers. And that beer toast may soon also boast Long Island-grown hops. Sen. Charles Schumer, a Democrat, and State. Sen. Lee Zeldin, R-Shirley, are hoping to offset the loss of an excise tax exemption that New York State micro and craft beer breweries enjoyed for decades with a new tax credit of 14 cents per gallon of beer made in for the first 6.2 million gallons produced in a taxable year. Not only would it compensate for the $250,000 tax savings loss from the previous excise tax exemption but it will allow breweries to continue to expand and hire more employees, said the lawmakers. For The Blue Point …

Seriously, does anybody really believe in such a thing as a “one shot” tax? I believe if they tax the ferry it will be forever and only increase over time.   more ›
