Portrait Symbolizes Blue Point Teenager's Passion for Art, Helping Others

B-BP High School art teacher recalls Billy Schettino's love of art, music and doing good by others.

As you step into the Blue Point home of Jo Ann and Luigi Schettino, one of the first things that catches the eye is a vibrant portrait of their son, Billy, who died March 14 after he was hit by a sheriff’s car on the LIE while awaiting help following a hit-and-run accident. The painting, which hangs next to the front door in the family's living room, was created by Bayport-Blue Point art teacher Ronald Brandt, who said he was inspired by the teen’s love of art and was born out of a class lesson Brandt began a week after Schettino’s death. Schettino, an 18-year-old Bayport Blue Point graduate, had been an art student of Brandt’s in his first year of teaching at the high school several years ago and had taken drawing and painting classes. “…

Catch a Drive-In Movie Tonight; Pirates to Land in Sayville Next Month

New local vet hospital to open soon and Visual Arts Showcase happening this weekend.

It looks like the new animal hospital and care center is nearly ready to open its doors on Montauk Highway in Sayville. There also seems to be a new ‘pet animal clinic’ at the corner of Gillette Avenue and Montauk in Bayport these days. Does that mean more people have more pets these days or are just taking better care of pets one has to wonder. The recent newsletter of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce was jammed packed with great news. According to the newsletter Sayville Running Company store co-owner Brendan Barrett finished in the top 13 of this past week's LI Marathon. The Long Island Maritime Museum sent Patch an update this week on the annual ‘Pirate Festive Aaarghhhives’ slated to be held June 16 and 17. Let Patch save you time. …

BAFFA Art Exhibit Boasts Student Talents

Event featured works of young artists from 10 local high schools.

There was award-winning work everywhere you looked this weekend at the BAFFA Student Invitational Art Exhibit held this weekend at the Gillette House in Sayville. Ribbons adorned top finishers in a slew of different artistic categories and many students from both Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville took first, second, third and honorable mention awards.  Kayla MacFarlane, of Sayville, was given the Jacqueline C. Palmer Award for photography.

Sayville Teen Vocalist Advances in Talent Competition

Sayville freshman Kayla Stockert moves onto second round in talent show competition.

Sayville teenager Kayla Stockert is advancing to the second round of competition in the MSG Varsity Talent Show after her initial performance in round one pulled in a winning number of votes. "As I was sitting and waiting to hear the result, I was so nervous that I felt my legs shaking," said the teen. "When I finally heard my name announced, I couldn't believe it and started yelling, screaming and celebrating with 20 of my friends and family. The overall MSG Varsity Talent Show experience is one of the coolest things I have ever been a part of," said the high school freshman. A Look at Sayville's Spring Fest Celebration

The weekend event drew children, parents and shoppers to park events and store sales.

The Sayville Chamber of Commerce's Spring Fest event this Saturday offered something for everyone: music by the local middle school choir, awards for student artistict endeavors, sporting clinics for budding volleyball and baseball players and a glorious day to walk Main Street and enjoy all the shops Sayville has to offer. Patch spent a few hours checking out the activities and events.
