Town Hosts Several Cultural Events

Patch’s Town Notebook this week looks at several cultural events Islip Town will be sponsoring over the next few weeks. Each event is open to residents and non-residents of the town, with those living within Islip receiving a discount on tickets.

Tickets to all trips are available through the town’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. For more information call 224-5425.

On March 19, the town will sponsor a bus trip to see the hit Broadway show “Catch Me If You Can.” Tickets are $115 for residents and $120 for non-residents. Lunch is not included.

Islip Town is also sponsoring a trip to the Fonthill Museum, the home of Henry Chapman Mercer, on Wednesday, May 11. Tickets are $49 for residents and $54 for non-residents.

Mercer was a ceramist, scholar and antiquarian and Fonthill serves as a showplace for his Moravian tiles that were produced during the American arts and crafts movement. After the tour of Fonthill, participants will make a brief stop at the Moravian Tile Workshop and then visit Peddler’s Village for shopping and lunch.

Later in May, the town is sponsoring a trip to the Broadway hit “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" on Saturday, May 21. The show stars Daniel Radcliffe, who is best know for playing Harry Potter.

Tickets are $120 for residents and $125 for non-residents. Lunch is not included.

Airport Food Gets Kudos

The quality of food at airports across the nation has been improving in recent years, and according to one Southwest Airlines flight attendant, Long Island MacArthur Airport’s Mamma Lombardi’s is among the best airport food in the nation.

In a post on blogsouthwest.com, flight attendant Joey Reynolds listed Mamma Lombardi’s as the second best airport food in the nation.

“Tucked in the back corner of the food court at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip, at first glance Mamma Lombardi’s could easily be mistaken for your typical food court pizzeria,” Reynolds wrote in his blog post.

He recalled a story when a co-worker insisted that Reynolds have a sandwich, even though he was not hungry.

“When I said no, he bought me one anyway,” he recalled. “I am now forever indebted to him as that chicken parmesan hero left me in a food coma! I was speechless, and even though I was full I wanted another one.”

Senior Club Officers Installed

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently installed the 2011 officers for the West Islip Senior Club #1. The event was held at the Higbie Lane Senior Center in West Islip.

The officers include Emily Andreas, president; William Hunter, vice president; Geanie Blake, secretary; and Joyce Grimes, treasurer.
