The Naturopath's Medicine Chest

Natural remedies for everyday health problems, such as congestion, stomach upset and headaches.

Many of my patients ask me what's in my medicine chest. So here are some of the things every good natural medicine chest should contain. Since this is a natural medicine chest, you won't find things like Advil or Tylenol.  Everything in this  chest will be Mother Nature's best remedy for what ails you.

Colostrum

For general well being, you need to keep colostrum on hand and take it every day, especially in cold and flu season. If you are like me and don't ever get a flu shot, this is very important. Colostrum is an immune modulator which keeps you on an even keel. Tincture of Echinacea. I don't care what anyone says, echinacea is a great immune booster and preventative, I would not be without it. Take it two weeks on and two weeks off. Double your dosage when feeling a cold coming on.

Occillococcinum

Best homeopathic cold and flu remedy you can buy over the counter.  I also like Air-borne. Take these as the label directs. Cold-eze and products containing zinc also disrupt the progress of a cold by keeping the virus from replicating.

Willow Bark

For minor headaches, keep willow bark on hand, either in pill form or as a tincture. Butterbur is especially good for migraine, as is feverfew. For a topical remedy, try Head-on, (it really works), or a "headache dome."  This is a very old remedy if you can find it. Rub it on your forehead and temples and your headache vanishes.

Intestinal Formula #1

For regularity, I like Dr. Richard Schulze's Intestinal Formula #1, and for doing a cleanse, his Intestinal Formula #2. You can get them on his website and he will send you a complete instruction manual written in his own irrepressible style. Dr. Schulze is a giant of natural healing and one of my idols. He has the courage of a lion and his products are superb and well priced. You should also have glycerin suppositories, children's are fine for everyone.

Milk of Magnesia

For upset stomachs, baking soda, enteric coated peppermint pills or Milk of Magnesia will straighten you right out.

Witch Hazel

For wounds, bruises, stings and cuts, Dickinson's . I've written about it and everyone should have it on hand. Hydrogen peroxide, a few drops in pure water make a great mouthwash and diluted it makes a good cleaner for wounds.  Arnica Montana, 10X, and arnica cream for bruising and aches.  I also like Quantum Super Lysine cream. This mixture of L-lysine, beeswax and olive oil is a champ at knocking out cold sores and healing minor burns. Terrasil, for stubborn sores and diabetic ulcers of the skin, and pure aloe vera, for anything skin related. Tea tree oil is on my shelf and will always be. It's an antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral all in one little bottle. It can soothe a bite or cut and un-stuff a nose. Great stuff!

Both Hyland's and Similasan make products for sleeping, stuffy sinuses and teething as well as great eye drops. Most all pharmacies carry them now.

Other must-haves

Bandages made of pure cotton, latex free "band aids" and exam gloves, a seaweed product called Nasal-Cease for nosebleeds and non-allergenic tape, are also must haves.

Just a reminder, I have no financial interest in any of these products. I use them myself and have for many years and so I recommend them to you from personal experience. Remember to read the labels before you buy to be sure you are not sensitive to any ingredients.

You'll be well prepared for any small emergency with this natural medicine chest on hand.
