Sayville Wrestling Falls to MacArthur

Team has good showing against defending Nassau powerhouse.

The Sayville wrestling team was unable to keep its momentum going from a  in Orlando, Florida, losing to MacArthur 43-22 in a non-league dual Thursday at Sayville High School.

MacArthur (9-1) , the 11th ranked team in New York state according to the NYS Sportswriters' Poll, had some trouble in the lower weight classes with the Golden Flashes, as Matt Leshinger, Nick Pesko and Chris Siracusa all earned victories. Leshinger took just 1:48 to pin John Dougherty at 112 lbs.

Chris Siracusa continued his strong 2010 campaign for Sayville (5-2) with a sound 14-1 tech of John Funes at 125 lbs.

That allowed Sayville to jump out to a 13-3 lead early on, but MacArthur responded with eight consecutive victories, including major decisions by defending Nassau champion Chris Perez at 140 lbs. and Peter Mack at 145 lbs.

The Golden Flashes wrestled again without senior co-captain Steven Leshinger, who is nursing a few injuries. Leshinger's status is still uncertain for the team's next tournament in at Half Hollow Hills East on December 28.

All-County selection Angelo Rella earned a pin at 135 lbs. to help end any early momentum Sayville had.

Sayville got some late points from a pin at 189 lbs. by Oliver Hull and an 8-5 decision in favor of Albert Rios, but the match had long since been decided.
