Sayville's Ferreira Named NYS Co-Player Of The Year

Golden Flashes QB caps championship season with one more award.

Sayville High School quarterback Steven Ferreira has been named the New York State Class A co-player of the year by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The senior signal-caller led the Golden Flashes to a 12-0 record and the L in November. Ferreira set Long Island career records of 6,407 passing yards and 73 touchdown passes. He shares the award with Aquinas junior running back Billy Lombardi.

Sayville’s 78-61 win over Nassau County Champion Lawrence High School was one wildest high school football games in state history.

Sayville and Lawrence combined for 139 points, the highest scoring game in Long Island high school football history. Football has been played on Long Island since 1884. In addition, Sayville's 78 points are the most scored by any team in a single Long Island Championship game, breaking the mark of 62 set by Freeport in 2010.

In December Sayville was awarded the as the top high school football team in Suffolk County.
