Ferreira Breaks LI Passing Record as Sayville Shuts Out Bellport

Sayville quarterback Steven Ferreira breaks Long Island's all-time career passing yards record.

Steven Ferreira not only led his team to a whopping 41-0 shutout over the Bellport Clippers Saturday afternoon, but he broke Long Island's all-time passing yards record as well.

Top that with a halftime ceremony for senior parents on senior parent day as a Sayville football tradition, this was one great Saturday for the Sayville Golden Flashes (6-0).

John Haggart had two touchdowns on 15 carries for a total of 143 yards, as well as three sacks. Haggart was a force to be reckoned with all game, but was sidelined in the third quarter with a knee injury and did not return.

Ferreira, who went 13-for-25 with 237 yards and three touchdown passes against Bellport, broke Long Island's all-time passing yards record with a 56-yard touchdown pass to James Rupp midway through the third quarter.

His completion pass to Rupp put him ahead of Tony Capozzoli of St. Dominic's on the all-time passing yards list for Long Island. Capozzoli held the record for 36 years, passing for 5,376 yards from 1972-75. Ferriera's career total is now 5,384 yards. Ferreira left the game after the completion, and Connor O'Neil finished Sayville's quarterback duties for the rest of the game.

“He's always on the money, it's great for him,” Sayville head coach Robert Hoss said of Ferreira.

Sayville led 28-0 at the end of the first half, and held the Clippers to only 39 yards, who were no threat on offense. Tom Dieckhoff and Tom Hannan both collected touchdown passes from Ferreira as well as Haggart and Kyle Murray running in for two touchdowns.

During halftime, parents of the senior players of the Golden Flashes team were thanked for their appreciation and dedication with an on-field ceremony. But it wasn't long until Sayville was back on the field to finish off the Clippers.

Haggart ran in for another touchdown early in the third quarter at 10:37 to make Sayville's lead even bigger, 35-0, before leaving the game a few minutes later with a knee injury.

At 6:12 of the third quarter, Ferreira delivered a 56-yard touchdown pass, shattering Long Island's career all-time passing yard record. Zack Sirico made the last touchdown, a 45-yard run which put Sayville ahead 40-0. The extra point was good for a final score of 41-0.

This was Sayville's first shutout of the season, and they remain undefeated. Sayville will be away for their next game on October 22 at 6:30 p.m. against Comsewogue High School.
