Boys Basketball: Glenn 2012 Preview

After a winless 2011 season the Glenn Knights look to improve under a new coach.

With a new head coach and philosophy in place, the Glenn boys’ basketball team is looking to improve on a forgettable 2010-11 season. Head coach Charly Rogemer is the man now in charge of the program.

“Last year we had a problem with playing together – we were being individuals really,” Rogemer said. “Now we’re trying to work as a team with movement on offense and movement on defense and I think if we do that and play as a team then we will have a successful season.”

Rogemer is entering his third year in the Glenn program – he was a volunteer varsity assistant two years ago and the JV coach last year. Now he will be looked upon to lead a team that was not able to win a game last year.

“Last year we were under where we wanted to be – they didn’t have a win – and that was difficult,” he said. “I think that the guys are buying into what I’m saying and playing as a team. Offensively things are coming. Defensively I think we’re going to do a lot of similar things to what we did last year but the intensity is going to go up. It’s showed so far in our first few games. It looks good so far.”

The Knights already got the monkey off its back with a 45-40 victory over Sayville in the team’s second game.

Coach: Charly Rogemer

Top Players:

  • Anton Swain, senior, guard
  • Kevin Dixon, senior, forward
  • LaMeek Jarvis, senior, guard

Position Breakdown: Rogemer is going to depend heavily on a group of six seniors who he said played a lot of minutes as juniors last year. In particular he is looking for big contributions from Anton Swain, Kevin Dixon and LaMeek Jarvis.

Anton Swain is “a leader on and off the court. He’s showing that so far and we need it to continue,” Rogemer said. “He needs to be more vocal and a team player as well.” In addition to his leadership abilities, Swain also excels at scoring the basketball. He’s led the team in scoring it each of its three games this year, averaging 19 points a game.

Senior big man Kevin Dixon, who Rogemer said is the “epitome of a team player” will be looked at to shoulder the load defensively and rebounding. “He’s been doing a great job defensively and offensively working on his post moves,” Rogemer said.

Jarvis, a slashing guard, is going to be counted on to put points on the board by getting to the hoop and the foul line.

Expectations:  The most important thing for Glenn will be the way that the team comes together around a new coach coming in after a down season.

“I think they have to buy into what I’m saying,” Rogemer said. “So far they’re doing that and if they continue it and continue to go to the spots that I ask both offensively and defensively we’re going to have a successful season. We have the athletes, we really do. It’s just us working together and buying into the system that’s in place and from there it’s really going to jump for us.”
